Tea seed manufacturers

Tea seeds are primarily sourced for two distinct purposes: oil extraction (Camellia oil) and saponin production. High-quality seeds are used to produce edible camellia oil, known as 'Oriental Olive Oil' due to its high smoke point and oleic acid content. In the cosmetic industry, they are used for hair and skin care products. Additionally, the byproduct tea seed meal is widely used in aquaculture to eliminate predatory fish and in agriculture as a natural molluscicide and organic fertilizer.

Buyers must focus on the oil content (typically 25%-35%) and moisture content (should be <10%) to prevent mold during transit. The acid value and peroxide value are critical for food-grade oil seeds; lower values indicate better freshness. For buyers interested in cleaning agents or pesticides, the triterpenoid saponin content is the decisive factor. Always request a Certificate of Analysis (COA) to verify these chemical properties.

For food-grade applications, suppliers should hold ISO 22000 or HACCP certifications. If the seeds are intended for the organic market, USDA Organic or EU Organic certifications are mandatory. Furthermore, because tea seeds are agricultural products, a Phytosanitary Certificate issued by the exporting country's national plant protection organization is essential to clear customs and ensure the shipment is free from pests and diseases.

Tea seeds are typically harvested in autumn (October to November). Sourcing during the harvest peak ensures the freshest stock and most competitive pricing. B2B buyers should consider long-term contracts or pre-harvest booking to secure volume, as prices can fluctuate based on crop yields and the global demand for natural surfactants and healthy oils.

The most significant risk is aflatoxin contamination caused by improper drying or high humidity during sea freight. Buyers should mandate the use of desiccants and ventilated containers. Another risk is adulteration, where old seeds are mixed with new ones; this can be mitigated by conducting pre-shipment inspections (PSI) through third-party agencies like SGS to verify crop year and quality.

When communicating with suppliers on Made-in-China.com, focus on transparency of the supply chain. Ask if they are a direct processor or a collector. Negotiate for a tiered pricing model based on oil yield—if the lab test shows lower oil content than promised, a price adjustment clause should be triggered. Requesting a small trial order (e.g., 1-5 tons) before committing to full container loads is a standard professional strategy.

To ensure payment safety, utilize secured payment services provided by the platform or use Letter of Credit (L/C at sight) for large bulk orders. This ensures that the supplier only receives payment after presenting valid shipping documents and inspection certificates. Avoid direct wire transfers to private accounts; always use the verified company bank account listed on their professional profile.

Tea seeds are usually shipped in bulk bags (jumbo bags) or 50kg PP bags. For long-distance cross-border shipping, ensure the Incoterms are clearly defined (e.g., FOB or CIF). Buyers must confirm that the shipping line provides food-grade containers if the seeds are for oil extraction. Additionally, check the specific import tariffs and VAT for oilseeds in your destination country to calculate the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).
