Key specifications include the design pressure and temperature (must comply with ASME Section VIII or equivalent PED standards), the storage capacity (usually sized for 10-20 minutes of boiler feed water demand), and the material of construction. For internal components exposed to corrosive gases, 300-series stainless steel is mandatory to prevent premature failure.

The choice depends on your load stability and maintenance capabilities. Tray-type deaerators offer the highest efficiency and better performance during part-load operations, but they are larger and more expensive. Spray-type deaerators are more compact and cost-effective, making them ideal for applications with steady loads and limited overhead space. Ensure the supplier provides a performance guarantee for both dissolved oxygen and carbon dioxide removal across your entire operating range.

Since a deaerator is a pressure vessel, it must meet strict safety codes. Verify that the manufacturer holds an ASME 'U' or 'S' Stamp for North American markets or CE/PED certification for Europe. Additionally, ensure the welding processes are certified under ISO 3834 and that Non-Destructive Testing (NDT), such as Radiographic Testing (RT) or Ultrasonic Testing (UT), is performed on all major seams to ensure structural integrity.

To ensure operational safety, the system should include automated water level controls and pressure-regulating valves. Look for suppliers who offer PLC-based control panels with HMI interfaces that can integrate with your facility's SCADA system via Modbus or Profibus. Essential safety features include high/low-level alarms, overflow traps, and vacuum breakers to prevent vessel collapse during shutdown.

The biggest risks are structural damage during transit and non-compliance with local safety regulations. To mitigate this, require the supplier to provide a Manufacturer's Data Report (MDR) before shipping. Use professional third-party inspectors (like SGS or TÜV) to conduct a Pre-Shipment Inspection (PSI) to verify dimensions, weld quality, and coating thickness. Ensure the vessel is secured with heavy-duty cradles and sea-worthy packaging to prevent shifting in the container or on a flat rack.

Custom deaerators typically have lead times of 12 to 20 weeks. Negotiate a milestone-based payment schedule: for example, 30% deposit, 30% upon completion of main welding, 30% after successful hydrostatic testing, and the final 10% after receipt of all compliance documentation. This keeps the supplier motivated and protects your capital. Always use Trade Assurance or Letters of Credit (L/C) for high-value transactions to ensure financial security.

Deaerators are often Out-of-Gauge (OOG) cargo. You must confirm if the unit fits in a 40HC container or requires a Flat Rack or Breakbulk shipping. Provide the supplier with your specific Incoterms (FOB or CIF) preference; however, for large vessels, FOB is often preferred by experienced buyers to maintain control over the specialized ocean freight and insurance. Ensure the supplier applies a marine-grade protective coating to prevent corrosion from salt air during the voyage.

Focus on Audited Suppliers who have undergone on-site inspections. Check their Business License and Export Licenses specifically for pressure vessels. Review their Transaction History and look for experience in exporting to your specific region, as this indicates familiarity with your local customs and technical standards.
