Fennel seeds manufacturers

High-quality fennel seeds should exhibit a bright green to yellowish-green color; dull brown seeds often indicate old stock or poor drying processes. The essential oil content, primarily Anethole, should ideally be above 1.5% for culinary use and higher for medicinal extraction. Ensure the seeds are uniform in size, free from stalks, stones, and dust, and possess a strong, sweet, anise-like aroma.

Buyers must ensure compliance with ISO 7928-1:1991 for whole fennel seeds. For food safety, products must meet Codex Alimentarius standards regarding pesticide residues (MRLs) and mycotoxin levels (Aflatoxin). If importing to the US, FDA registration and FSMA compliance are required; for the EU, Phytosanitary Certificates and adherence to EC No 396/2005 are mandatory.

The moisture content should not exceed 10-12%. Excess moisture leads to mold growth (Aspergillus) and the degradation of essential oils. For long-term storage, seeds should be kept in cool, dry, and dark environments using multi-wall paper bags or vacuum-sealed PP bags to prevent the volatilization of the aromatic compounds.

These grades refer to the physical size and appearance of the seed. 'Bold' seeds are the premium grade, often used for direct consumption or sugar-coating (Mukhwas) due to their aesthetic appeal. 'Medium' and 'Small' grades are typically diverted for grinding into powder or oil extraction, offering a more cost-effective solution for industrial food processing.

The primary risks include adulteration (mixing with spent seeds or exhausted spice) and microbiological contamination (Salmonella). To mitigate this, always request a Certificate of Analysis (COA) from a third-party lab like SGS or Bureau Veritas before the balance payment is made. Ensure the contract specifies 'Current Year Crop' to avoid receiving old, flavorless inventory.

Fennel seed prices are volatile and tied to agricultural harvest cycles (typically Feb-April in major regions). Negotiate for FOB or CIF terms depending on your logistics capability. For new buyers, start with a trial order of 1-5 tons to verify quality consistency. For bulk orders exceeding 20 tons (1 FCL), aim for a 5-8% volume discount compared to LCL pricing.

Fennel seeds are sensitive to cross-contamination of odors. Ensure the shipping container is food-grade, dry, and free of strong smells from previous cargoes. Use desiccants (silica gel) inside the container to prevent 'container rain' during transit across different climate zones, which can cause clumping and spoilage.
